Myer Recipient of 2009 SHA Ficquett-Holley Award
This year the award was presented to Michelle Myer, APRN. Michelle is a Nurse Consultant in Acute Disease Epidemiology for the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) in Columbia, South Carolina. As a DHEC employee, Michelle is part of the on-call Epi team where she draws from her knowledge as an advanced practice nurse and years of experience in public health to demonstrate her understanding of the situations that arise and to advise on a course of action that will result in positive outcomes. She is a team player who recognizes the strengths of others, goes above and beyond to meet with success, and strives for excellence in all areas. An excellent teacher, she willingly gives her time to address various groups always recognizing their level of expertise and involvement in the topic of issues to be discussed. She has captivated the attention of administrative support staff and allied health professionals from various settings being asked to respond in disaster situations. School nurses repeatedly ask for her to address school exclusion issues, outbreak situations and other Epi concerns. She has presented to undergraduate and graduate students, at nursing conferences, to advance practice registered nurses and a host of other entities and always receives excellent evaluations. Most notably she shares her knowledge and experiences with student nurses, always being among the first to volunteer to have student accompany her and always willing to make them part of her work environment. As a postgraduate student herself pursuing a nurse doctorate degree, she makes time to meet course requirements without sacrificing or compromising her work related commitments. A leader by example, mentor by desire and DHEC employee by choice, she epitomizes public health nursing and the responsibilities of a nurse consultant. Active in professional organizations, her church and her community, Michelle carries the best of public health to individuals in all walks of life. To Michelle, embodying the principles of public health nursing is a way of life. Whether doing missionary work in other places, addressing an outbreak situation or engaging in civic activities, she practices the protection and promotion of health, prevention or disease, safety and environmental protection. Michelle is a patient advocate, a public health champion, a compassionate nurse, a respected colleague, and an admired professional. | |||||
